I used to wonder how to stay disciplined when working from home. Then I did some research and found out that tiny habits were all I needed.
It’s quite discouraging when you’re trying to start or even maintain the lifestyle of an online entrepreneur. A lot of people wonder how to stay disciplined. So they search for some guide online and they’re off to the races. They maintain their schedule for a few weeks at the most. Then distractions and procrastination set in. How to combat this is building little tiny habits. Let’s look into how to stay disciplined when working from home.
The Not So Common Goal Setting Technique
What To Do?
Take out a pen and paper, we’ll need this for later in the list too. I want you to set your “someday” goal for 3 aspects of your life. One is financial/personal achievement. This would likely be something related to your business. The second is health. For example, you could want to live to 100 years old. Lastly, relationships. This could be staying dedicated to your significant other until the day you die. Think big! You may have heard 10x your goals to be guaranteed to reach them. I think that is fairly unrealistic. Just ask yourself what you think you’re able to accomplish then aim at least 20% outside of your comfort zone. If you can go 300%, great!
Now work backward to 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, 1 month, 1 week, today, and now. Write down what you need to do to achieve each one. This can take some time but it’s 100% worth it. This is the best way I’ve found on how to stay disciplined. Now, take a look at your now, today, and weekly goals. Realize the habit that’s behind these goals. Like, if you want to make $100 per day on YouTube, then your habit should be to record at least 15 minutes of footage every day. Want to live to 100? Start going grocery shopping every other day to ensure you have fresh produce in your fridge at all times. Furthermore, if you wanted to have the happiest life possible with your significant other, then start reading 10 pages of The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman.
Don’t Attempt To Build Rome In A Day
We’ve all done it. We have an end goal in mind and want to rush to finishing it. What we forget about is the journey there. It may not seem like it at first, but the journey is the best part! Life would be so boring if everything you wanted was just handed to you. The strategy? Aim to be 1% better every day. This is a very important note when asking how to stay disciplined. Sure there may be days where you only get 0.25% better. But, then you’ll have days where you’ll jump 3% better in that single day. The thing is, the only way to learn is to fail. So, if you didn’t fail that day then you likely didn’t learn much. Don’t fail on purpose. But, when you’re learning a new skill, come at it from all angles.
Your Personalized Morning Ritual
What They All Say
You’ve heard all the gurus claim you have to wake up at 5 am with only 6 hours of sleep. For most people, this is total bs. The majority of people need 7-9 hours of sleep depending on the individual. Also, waking up at 5 am is not necessary unless you start work at 7 with a 30-minute commute. Give yourself around 90 minutes to get everything done before you have to go to work. Hopefully, this means sitting behind your computer at home. This gives you time to brush, floss, wash your face then hop in the shower. Also, getting in some walking or running early is a good idea too. So, maybe you’ll wait till you get back to shower. A 15-minute walk around your neighborhood is a truly amazing way to wake up and something I also have to do more often.
Make It For You!
Other than that stuff, you need to make a ritual that matches you. This is one of the most important steps in answering the question how to stay disciplined. If you’re trying to eat healthier, make sure to always have a lot of breakfast ingredients stocked. Trying to manage stress or anxiety? Start meditating for 5 minutes per day. Or, are you trying to keep your mind sharp or learn a new skill. Read at least 10 pages of a non-fiction book such as personal development books. My favorite read in that genre is The One Thing by Gary W. Keller. I’m on my 4th read of it to keep me on track with my one thing. Whatever best reflects your goals, think of how you can add it to your morning ritual. If you want to be successful, you need a morning ritual.
Staying On Track
This one can be tricky for most people. I struggle with it myself. The question comes down to how to stay disciplined. The best trick I’ve come across is to take that piece of paper we wrote up from step one. Then add to it what your perfect life would look like. Who would you be? Where would you live? How often would you exercise? What connections would you have made? How would your relationship with your significant other look? Whatever you dream of your life being someday, write it on this piece of paper. Now, keep this paper in your wallet or phone case. I personally have mine placed in a Gecko Card Holder. I’d also recommend making a copy and placing it where you’ll first see it in the morning. I have mine on the wall beside my desk where I keep my phone alarm.
There’s a common myth that you need to maintain a work-life balance. The truth is that you’ll accomplish nothing if you keep them in balance. It’s more of a counterbalancing act. You need to dedicate enough time to important tasks while leaving less important ones behind. Your work life will zig-zag back and forth reaching a further distance than your personal life would. You need a lot of time to explore new avenues for your business. Your personal life, on the other hand, can’t be left alone for too long. The last thing you want to do is work your *** off day and night with no time left to spend with your significant other or kids.
The End Goal
The point in exiting the 9 to 5 is to work less and spend more time with family and friends. Sure, in the beginning, you may have some 70 hour weeks if you’re working a 9 to 5 and turning a side hustle into a full-time thing. But, eventually, you’ll ideally be able to cut your workweek down to around 20 hours. This is what happens when you answer “how to stay disciplined?”. This on average will only take you between 3-5 years to match your current income you make at your 9 to 5. Ideally, this income will mostly be passive allowing you to earn more and work less.
