How do you have a social life with an online business? It’s easy to get caught up in your work and get a lack of sunlight.
It can be quite depressing when you’ve finished work for the day only to realize that it’s already 7 pm and the sun is down. Having a social life with an online business is an ongoing struggle for myself and many others. So, I looked into recommended ways to combat this issue to help people like you and I. Let’s read into how to tackle this barrier.
1. Schedule Your Work Day
I still have problems sometimes with scheduling my workday online. Coming up with a schedule will help you have more free time outside of working on your business. On top of that, having a timer going helps create more focused work. There’s an amazing method to completing focused work that many successful entrepreneurs and business people use.
The Pomodoro Technique
There are a few different ways to do this technique, but I’m going to cover the most common one I’ve come across. First, you come up with a list of only the most important tasks that need to be completed that day. Then, you choose #1 on that list that needs completing. Followed by setting a timer for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, you take a 5-minute break. This 25/5 is repeated 4 times, but the 4th break is for 15 minutes vs. 5. Move onto #2 if you end up finishing the task before 25 minutes is up. Similarly, if you’re taking longer than expected, you push that task to the next 25-minute interval. If you do end up taking longer than the 25 minutes, spend that 5-minute break figuring out how to complete it more efficiently. This technique has helped me tremendously.
2. Protect Your Weekends
This is the biggest area where you will achieve a social life with an online business. There are some people out there that say you have to work 15 hour days to be successful. For most, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Working for 15 hours, especially 15 focused hours is going to leave you dead in the water. Sure, there may be some 70 hour work weeks at the beginning of your journey, but this is just temporary. Ideally, you’ll be spending a minimum of 20 hours per week working. This will help you immensely in having a social life with an online business.
What To Do On The Weekends?
Keep your weekends for spending time with friends and family. Also, schedule some quality alone time like reading or meditating. There are a million things you could do on the weekend. Just look back to what you used to do for fun (or wish to do). It could be going to events with friends, a date with your significant other, or playing video games with your kids. Check your local online event website or Facebook group. Nightlife, concerts, sports, festivals, food & wine, and performing arts are some popular categories for events that could be in your area.
Joining a local group such as yoga, volunteering, running, board & card games, book club, etc is another great choice. I know it can be quite overwhelming with all of the choices. Just set out to try one or 2 clubs per month. After a few months, you’ll know which ones you like.
3. Work In A Public Place
Working in public can be a great way to get a creative balance. Sometimes you need to be outside to think outside of the box. And, if you want to advance in the business world, you need to think outside of the box. Working in a public place can be a great way to meet fellow business people and potential friends too. Remember if you meet somebody who is quite chatty to let them know you have to get back to work but will contact them later.
Now, you don’t have to work in a public place every day of the week. Especially if you find you get distracted easily. However, choosing 1-2 days of the week to work in a public place can create a great balance. Coffee shops, libraries, college campuses are all great choices. Essentially everywhere has free Wi-Fi now, so the choices are endless.
4. Significant Other
Your other half is your favorite person in the world. Because of this, they deserve you at your best. Yes, working on your online business is important. It’s like any other job in the sense that you’re creating a future for yourselves. The good thing about owning an online business vs. working a 9 to 5 is that you’re in control of your schedule. If a cool event comes up that your Hunny or Hubby doesn’t want to miss, take the night off. There should be nothing saying you can’t live part of the dream before creating it completely. If you’re having a hard time connecting with your loved one when you’re out, I highly recommend reading The 5 Love Languages. This book has helped tremendously in my relationship.
Schedule A Date Night
Make this something special vs. your regular vegging out watching TV with no real deep interaction. Scheduling a date night can help keep your love life on track to last forever and stay beautiful. Also, you don’t have to go to the most expensive place either. It could even be some sort of outing & home combo. You could take turns choosing a place you want to eat. Then, you could head back home to watch a movie together. Movie theaters are crowded (and expensive). Plus, you can’t pause the movie when you have to go to the washroom. And you know…if it leads to other stuff you have that option. Set the environment though, buy some scented candles or incense and dim the lights. Maybe choose a movie that promotes a conversation to feel connected.
Other Date Night Ideas
Dinner and a movie too boring? There are many other things you can do. Going rock climbing can be an adventurous and connecting experience. You’ll be there to motivate each other and see who can climb the highest. Mini-putt is although a cliche suggestion, very connecting experience if you want it to be. Glow in the dark mini-putt can promote the mood for later too. Lastly, try going to a beginner’s one-off course for something. It could be drop-in yoga, learning to code, first-aid, painting or whatever. Anything both of you are interested in learning, why not do it together? Learning a new skill can be intimidating at times. Having your lover there with you can not only be motivating but a bonding experience too. Maybe it will give one of you that push that the other has been trying to give for a while.
When most people think of having a social life, they think of spending time with people in person. This could not be farthest from the truth. There are endless options for connecting with others online. Twitch.tv has evolved from just gaming. There are now many genres of streams to choose from other than gaming. Coding, painting, decorating, singing, music, sports and fitness, ASMR, talk shows and podcasts, food and drink are just some of the popular IRL channels. Twitch is a great place to connect with people that share similar interests as your own. They can also give you motivation along the path to learning a new skill such as coding or cooking. There are a wide variety of skill levels on the platform. You can seek out experts to ask advice, or newbies to promote learning together.
With Facebook being as old as it is, there are at least 10 groups for even the tiniest of niches. Facebook groups while not as video-focused, include many more topics than compared to Twitch. Every member of those groups is looking to connect with people that share their interests. Try it out! Find a group for a topic you’re already learning about or something completely new that you want to attempt in learning. I myself am in a couple of Facebook groups for pleasure and business. They definitely help in providing a social life with an online business.
No matter your age, you should treasure the time with your parents as they won’t be here forever. This can be hard when you’re younger, but as you mature you tend to care about this more. If you live far away from your parents, you should still make an effort to come to spend 1 week with them a few times a week. As they get a lot older, I’d recommend a lot more than that of course.
Your parents should be important to you. I do understand some people don’t have a good connection with their parents for a reason. I understand some things cannot be forgiven. But, often the stuff we tend to get mad at our parents about happened many years ago and doesn’t really matter anymore anyway. Usually, both of you have grown plenty since anything negative happened. Hopefully, you aren’t in this situation, but I know it’s more common than people expect it to be.
What Do You Spend Your Time Doing?
For the most part, most parents are just happy to see you. Which means you don’t really have to do anything special. All you need to do to connect is to spend time together. Watch TV, go grocery shopping, help cook. Talking about life can be a great thing too. Older people have so much knowledge and wisdom they’re willing to share if someone is willing to listen. Ask your parents how they got through their childhood, what their experience was coming out of college, their love life, even raising you. Even if you’ve asked these questions before, there’s likely stuff they forgot to mention or that didn’t sink in your you. Get them to tell you stories too. Ask about your ancestors, their most embarrassing stories, or weird dreams. Usually, normal time spent with your parents is the best because it reminds them of when they were raising you.
7. Have Pets?
Do you have any pets? Make sure to spend enough time with them too. It’s common for people to get pets and forget they exist. All some people do is just feed them and expect the pet to be happy. Your pet needs love and time “socializing” too. Have conversations with them. Sure, they won’t understand the words you’re saying, but, they will understand your tone. Telling your pet you love them in a calm tone is very meaningful to your pet. Even speaking directly to them like how your day went shows to your pet that you love and care for them.
I hope you picked up some nuggets that you’ll try adding to your life. I know at times I can struggle with every single one of the things mentioned in this list. If you’re reading this post that shows you care about making a change. Use that warm feeling to keep you putting one foot in front of the other.
